Salmon Arm is gearing up for the return of the Shuswap’s premiere mountain biking event.

The Salty Dog Enduro returns to the South Canoe trails on Sunday, May 12. Presented by the Shuswap Cycling Club, the annual event sees hundreds of cyclists participate in the gruelling six-hour ride, either solo or in teams. There’s also a three-hour ride for ages 15 and under, and the popular Salty Pup event for younger riders.

The six-hour ride begins at 10 a.m., the U15 Enduro at 10:30, the Junior Salty Pups at 11 and the Salty Pups at 11:35.

Race packages can be picked up on Saturday, May 11, in downtown Salmon Arm where the annual lead-in to the Enduro, the Salty Bike Fest – formerly Street Fest – runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition to the name change, Bike Fest organizers say there are other changes in store for this year’s downtown event, including a smaller footprint and a renewed focus on bike vendors and activities.

“We’re bringing the bikes back to downtown,” said Fest organizer Shelley Desautels. “Our goal this year is to create a more intimate and engaging experience for participants while highlighting the vibrant biking culture in our community.”

Vendors this year will be set up in the parking lot beside Skookum at 141 Shuswap Street N. People picking up their registration packages for the Enduro or wanting to participate in the bike games will find both on Hudson Street between McLeod and Shuswap streets, where the Shuswap Cycling Club will be on the barbecue, grilling up lunch for attendees.

Another way to fill your tummy is by competing in the annual pie-eating contest, featuring pies donated by the Shuswap Pie Company.

The fest will also feature several bike games, for adults and youth, along with a scavenger hunt designed to bring participants into the downtown.

“If you are wanting to participate in the bike games, make sure you bring your bikes and helmets,” said Desautels adding, “Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just getting started, there’s something for everyone at the Salty Bike Fest.”
