Swarms turn out in advance of Enderby mosquito referendum

Advanced polls have already seen 464 people cast their vote in rural Enderby’s mosquito control referendum.

The final opportunity to vote yes or no for Electoral Area F residents is Saturday, March 2 at the Enderby & District Senior’s Complex (1101 George St.), between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Qualified electors are asked: “Are you in favour of the Regional District of North Okanagan adopting Electoral Area F Mosquito Control Service Establishment Bylaw No. 2973, 2023, which would establish a service within the boundary of Electoral Area F to control mosquito larval habitats within specific areas of the Shuswap River floodplain to prevent the spread of mosquitos; which if approved will result in an annual requisition to not exceed the greater of $289,000 or $0.17 per $1,000 of net taxable value of land and improvements?”

Advanced polls took place Feb. 21 and 28.

There is no need to pre-register to vote as the registration of qualified electors will take place at the time of voting on March 2. Electors will be required to make a declaration that they meet the following requirements:

· be 18 years of age or older on general voting day;

· be a Canadian citizen;

· be a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration (at time of voting);

· be a resident of Electoral Area F on the day of registration (at time of voting) OR be a registered owner of real property in Electoral Area F for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration (at time of voting) ; and

· not be disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law.

Qualified electors will also be required to produce two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to prove identity and to prove either residency or that they are entitled to register in relation to the property. Picture identification is not necessary.

Electoral Area F does not include the City of Enderby.
